“O livro do cabelo, no entanto, exigiria o esforço de deixar a literatura à porta, como o meu marido esperando-me ao longo dos anos em quatro automóveis diferentes e ligando-me para perguntar se já me despachei, com receio de se dar a ver às raparigas dos salões, tantas vezes preconceituosas, ficando no carro para me proteger de reparos, ouvindo rádio, mexendo no telefone, fazendo tempo. No livro do cabelo, a literatura faz tempo no carro e olha-me sem me reconhecer à primeira quando entro perguntando-lhe se gosta.”


The book of my hair, meanwhile, would demand the effort of leaving literature waiting at the door, as my husband has waited for me outside salons throughout the years in four different cars, calling me to ask if I’ve already finished, worried he’ll be spotted by the girls at the salons, so often filled with prejudice, remaining in the car to spare me the commentary, listening to the radio, checking messages on his phone, passing the time.
